Retention (Maintenance)
After completing an orthodontic treatment, it is necessary to stabilize the result to prevent the teeth from moving back to their original positions. Retainers are used for this purpose.
The duration for which they need to be worn depends on the type and extent of the misalignment and other factors.
Retainers – an Overview:
- The removable retainer looks like a regular removable brace. It keeps the entire row of teeth in the corrected position.
- A positioner is a removable plastic appliance for the upper and lower jaw. It can also make minor adjustments.
- A lingual retainer is a thin wire attached to the back of the front teeth to prevent them from shifting.
